EDITOR'S LETTER

This issue showcases some uses of technology and data in healthcare industry.

You can find an interesting narration from a patient’s point of view (“From Home to Hospital: Digitalisation of Healthcare”), featuring the digital transformation of healthcare nowadays, whereby the delivery of healthcare services can start earlier from patients’ home itself. Microsoft partnered with various start-ups/companies to better engage patients in the journey of seeking consultation and treatment, with the help of latest technologies.

QuintilesIMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics has launched its Asian branch in Singapore in early September this year. From our interview with Dr Xavier Chan, Director of QuintilesIMS Institute, remarked, “Currently, the Institute is carrying out decision modelling for diseases like diabetes and stroke to simulate different treatment choices and its respective health and economic outcomes. This real-world data-driven modelling process can be similarly applied to other diseases as long as there is sufficient data available for analysis.”

Not only for doctors, nurses require real-time information to make timely, critical decisions at point-of-care as well. Refer to our interview with Michelle Troseth to learn about how big data is advancing healthcare and nursing practice.

In the Spotlights section, APBN features interviews with spokespersons from Kantar Health, Dell EMC, Saphetor, respectively, to understand the integration of data, genomics or mobile health app in healthcare systems.

In conjunction to the month of Men’s Health Awareness, we include an interview with Professor Kurt Miller and A/Prof. Edmund Chiong, informing us about the new data which shows that abiraterone acetate plus prednisone treatment, provided greater overall survival in men with advanced prostate cancer. Check it out if you would like to read about the common treatment, diagnostic tools, prevention strategies, and awareness level of prostate cancer in this region.
